Lungevity Breathe Deep Cleveland 5K Run/Walk

caraLUNGevity’s Breathe Deep Cleveland is a grassroots 5K fun run and walk brought to Cleveland by Cara McManus, a Bike Cleveland member and Super Volunteer. Cara was diagnosed with Stage IV ALK+ non-small cell lung cancer in August, 2013, at the age of 34. Like many of us, Cara was surprised to discover that 60% of lung cancer patients either never smoked or already quit. Sadly, Cara passed away on April 24, 2015, and we encourage you to honor her memory by participating in her event or donating to her cause, HERE.

Prior to her diagnosis, Cara was an active cyclist and had just completed a 150-mile charity bicycling tour for multiple sclerosis. During a routine physical, Cara complained of a pain in her calf, which ended up being a blood clot (DVT). As a precaution, her lungs were scanned for additional clots. It was then that doctors found a mass in Cara’s lung. The mass was biopsied – and she was told she had lung cancer.

Since diagnosis, Cara had undergone various treatments, many of which target the ALK mutation in her cancer, one of several genetic mutations associated with the disease. LUNGevity funds research into the development of treatments for these genetic mutations. Cara reached out to LUNGevity because she wanted to educate herself about lung cancer so she could then inform others about the disease – and motivate people to help find a cure.
