We offer education in several forms to riders and aspiring cyclists in the Greater Cleveland area. Education can often bridge the gap between participation in the pastime we love, and staying on the sideline out of fear or uncertainty. Our classes are FREE to Bike Cleveland members, so joining the movement and having access to our benefits is a solid investment. Our off-bike training, Bike Smarts (listed below,) is available on a $10 per class basis.
Bike Cleveland members have the opportunity to join us on educational rides. We offer two different versions: A ‘How We Roll’ ride in a small group, or a ‘Bike Buddy’ version that is a one-on-one experience. During your ride, you’ll enjoy a casual ride through Cleveland and it’s suburbs that prepares you to safely and confidently navigate traffic by bicycle. There will be stops along the way to discuss the pertinent subjects relating to that safety and confidence. Topics include bicycle traffic law, proper lane positioning and more.
For a more detailed description of what to expect and to register, contact our program manager firstname.lastname@example.org – but in the meantime, take a peek at these FAQ’s:
Q: What happens during the rides?
A: After introductions and a brief safety chat, we head out on the road and ride for a couple of miles at a time, stopping periodically for ride leaders to check in, discuss features of the route, process incidents that occur, answer questions and critique unsafe riding habits. We ride approximately 4 miles, then return to where participants can ask final questions.
Q: What information is covered?
A: We will cover bicycle traffic law, proper lane positioning, interacting peacefully with cars and buses and any additional topic of interest.
Q: What if I can’t make it for the whole ride?
A: If you can’t stick around until the ride concludes, please refrain from signing up for this ride. Ride leaders will not be available to escort participants back to start, with the exception of emergency situations. There will be another ride you can join in the near future!
Q: What should I bring with me?
A: Bring a helmet, a WORKING bicycle and, if it will get dark by the end of our ride, front and rear lights. Otherwise, just bring whatever will make you comfortable on the ride (e.g., phone, bottle of water, snacks, sunscreen, medication, etc.).
Q: Will there be someone available to help me fix/adjust my bicycle?
A: Unfortunately, no—our instructors cannot spend time making adjustments. If an instructor deems your bicycle unsafe or unrideable for ANY reason (e.g., low tire pressure, loose brakes or other parts, etc.) you will be asked to leave and re-register for a later class.
Q: How should I dress?
A: Wear whatever weather-appropriate clothing makes you comfortable (in winter this means WARM gloves)! There is no need to wear cycling-specific clothing unless you want to. Helmets, however, are REQUIRED on this ride.
Q: What happens if the weather is bad?
A: We don’t roll in thunderstorms or icy conditions, but we do roll in rain and light snow. Decisions regarding cancellations will be made and communicated by email within 2 hours of your ride. If there is no notification, you may assume that the ride is still on.
Q: What if I’m not a very strong cyclist?
A: How We Roll is paced according to the slowest rider in the group, and each ride features several stops for instruction. If you possess basic bike handling skills and can ride 4 miles within 2 hours, you should be fine. If you are concerned about your ability to complete the ride, you’ll want to pay special attention to the bicycle you use. Bicycles that fit well and those that have thinner tires are easier to ride than those with a poor fit or thick, knobby tires. And inflating your tires with air can do wonders for your ease of ride!
Q: Can I bring my kid(s)?
A: We welcome young people who are riding with parents or caregivers who are members, possess basic bike handling skills and can comfortably ride 4 miles within 2 hours. In general, we recommend age 12 and up, but use your discretion!
