Lakewood Bike to School Day
Date: May 27, 2015

The Harding and Garfield Middle Schools in Lakewood will join schools from around the country to celebrate National Bike to School Day on Wednesday May 27th, 2015. We anticipate 500 students will be riding to school along with parents, teachers and community leaders. This annual Bike to School Day is being presented by Bike Lakewood with the great assistance and support of the middle school principals and staff, along with the City of Lakewood, the PTA, Beat Cycles, and Spin Bike Shop. Get all the details about Lakewood’s Bike to School Day on Facebook.

Bike to School Day encourages a nationwide bike-focused celebration for students in the month of May and builds on the popularity and success of Walk to School Day, which is celebrated across the country – and the world – each October. Bike to School Day events raise awareness of the need to create safer routes for bicycling and walking and emphasize the importance of issues such as increasing physical activity among children, safety, reducing traffic congestion and concern for the environment. The events build connections between families, schools and the broader community.

In accordance with Lakewood City laws and safety in general we are happy to offer to all students the opportunity to purchase a bicycle helmet at a low cost. Helmet orders may be turned into the Health Center Staff and are due by Friday April 17th. Over the next month we will be releasing safety videos and worksheets on the facebook event page, through the schools, and during announcements. Please be sure to review the safety guidelines for bike to school day with your children.

The event begins with students, parents, and community leaders riding to school. Bicyclists will arrive at the school, lock up their bikes, and receive participation packets of appreciation provided by University Hospitals and other local organizations and businesses along with a raffle ticket. Students will fill out a bike-ability checklist survey that helps evaluate the event, road conditions, and intersection safety. Participants will also have a chance to win a cycling prize pack (items TBA).
