Madison Avenue from W. 117th to Riverside is being repaved and will receive bike lanes. The new configuration will alter Madison from a four lane street to a much more bike and pedestrian friendly 3 lane road with a center turn lane, bike lanes, and on street parking. This configuration will help calm traffic, and make Madison Ave safer for all road users. The resurfacing project is part of the larger “Madison on the Move” and is designed to attract people to businesses along the corridor. Phase 1 is currently underway from Riverside Ave to Mars Ave and traffic patterns have already been altered with on street parking along this stretch being temporarily eliminated.

“We have seen a marked increase in new businesses on Madison Avenue,” City Planner Jason Russell said. “Our investment is designed to support existing businesses and encourage new businesses to invest along Madison Avenue.”

As a Bronze Level Bicycle Friendly Community, Lakewood understands that people, not cars, are the keys to a thriving business district, and this project is a reflection of their commitment to creating transportation corridors that service all residents regardless of how they prefer to get around.
