Action Alert: Don’t Delay the Midway

NO MIDWAY DELAY 1 (1)

The Superior Midway project has finally completed public engagement, detailed design, and is fully funded. Now, the Ohio Department of Transportation’s highway expansion plan is threatening the long overdue groundbreaking of Cleveland’s Superior Midway project.

ODOT is requiring further traffic analysis to see how the project will interact with a planned highway expansion project, which will undergo more planning over the next several years and has no projected construction timeline. ODOT has been acquiring nearby land and buildings in Cleveland’s Midtown neighborhood over the years for other segments of the project, with the goal of increasing highway capacity and moving traffic more quickly around Dead Man’s Curve.

The Superior Midway concept was created in 2011 and has since been through several iterations of planning and design. A formal study was conducted by NOACA in 2017, followed by $8,329,000 of federal dollars awarded in 2018 and another $11.3 million in 2022 for construction. Traffic analysis for Superior Avenue was completed in March 2020. Original projections marked May 2025 for groundbreaking, but was pushed to August of 2026 due to railway bridge construction and necessary design adjustments.

Every year we delay the groundbreaking of this transformational project, the more expensive it becomes. Every year we delay, the more residents in Greater Cleveland lose trust in our leaders to deliver us better, safer streets that serve all people.

It is not too late for ODOT to give the green light to the City of Cleveland, move forward with bidding the project out, and ensure the project stays on schedule. Voice your support for the Midway today!
