Cleveland Takes First Step Toward Bike Sharing

Are you bike-curious? How about a bike share?

Participants in the 2011 Bike Cleveland Summit identified bike sharing as a priority to make Cleveland more bicycle-friendly. Bike sharing, a program that provides network of public bikes that can be rented, has been successful in getting more people on bikes across the country, in cities as diverse as Washington DC, Minneapolis, and Chattanooga. By providing greater access to bikes, bike share programs can help increase the number of people biking, decrease the amount of pollutants in the air, and improve community health, both physically and economically.

On Thursday, the City of Cleveland took a progressive step towards making bikes an integral and healthy component of our community’s transportation network by issuing a request for proposals to conduct a feasibility and implementation study for a bike sharing program. This important part of the process came after months of collaboration by the Bike Share Task Force, a group of local and regional organizations convened by Bike Cleveland, University Circle Inc., and Green City Blue Lake that includes representatives from the City of Cleveland, Positively Cleveland, Ohio City Inc., Downtown Cleveland Alliance, Greater Cleveland RTA, MidTown Cleveland, and NOACA.
