Bicyclist Fatality in Garfield Heights

Bike Cleveland is saddened to hear the news that a fellow cyclist, and mother of 5, was struck by a motor vehicle and killed on Tuesday, May 8th while riding a bicycle in Garfield Heights. Cleo Turpin was riding her bike on the small residential street of Osborn road when a car crashed into her. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends of Ms. Turpin.

The news of the crash was originally reported on Cleveland.com 19 days after the crash occurred. Additional details of the crash are currently being held by the Garfield Heights Police Department because the crash is under investigation. The department indicated they will make the crash report available to Bike Cleveland when the investigation is complete.

While we do not know all the details of the crash Bike Cleveland hopes that all users of the road will learn from this senseless tragedy, and respect the rights that cyclists have to operate on the road as any other vehicle. When moving around on the street — whether driving or bicycling — we all must hold ourselves to the highest standard of safety, and as vulnerable road users bikes and pedestrians must be prioritized to ensure safety.

We will update this post as details become available.
