Shaker Heights Awarded Bicycle Friendly Community Status

BFC_Bronze_Seal_2016Bike Cleveland would like to congratulate the City of Shaker Heights for earning official League of American Bicyclist Bicycle Friendly Community status at the bronze level! Shaker Heights joins a cutting-edge group of 372 communities across the United States, and only 13 communities in Ohio that are transforming the American landscape. Locally, they join Cleveland, Cleveland Heights, Lakewood, and Oberlin as cities who have achieved this status.

“Shaker Heights has long been a place striving to be more bicycle friendly,” said Jacob VanSickle, Executive Director of Bike Cleveland. “So it is great to see them formally recognized by the league, and I find it extremely encouraging to see local municipalities recognizing the benefits of promoting biking in their communities. It is our hope that our region continues to build momentum towards making Greater Cleveland a better place to live by leveraging the benefits of the bicycle.” VanSickle concluded.

Making bicycling safe and comfortable pays huge dividends in civic, community and economic development. Given the opportunity to ride through a more welcoming environment, residents enjoy dramatic health benefits, reduced congestion, increased property values and more money in their pockets to spend in the local economy. When communities welcome bicycling, tourism booms, businesses attract the best and the brightest, and governments save big on parking costs while cutting their carbon emissions.

Congratulations, Shaker Heights.
