Bike Lane Sweeper Guide + Volunteer Signup

BLSG

If you’re looking to volunteer and take out our Bike Lane Sweeper – you’re in the right place.

For your safety, and the proper operation of the sweeper, we need to make sure you know a few things before heading out. Please read through before attempting to attach the sweeper and head out on the road.

THE HITCH & YOUR BIKE

The sweeper uses a standard Burley brand bicycle trailer mount (pictured below) that fits under your quick release on the left side. We have these ready to borrow – – please make sure to return it at the end of your volunteer shift. To check your bike’s compatibility, take this Burley quiz (you can skip past the email signup by answering “no thanks”) to see your result: Burley Hitch Guide

We suggest using a bike that fits this standard hitch, but if your bike needs one of Burley’s alternate adaptors or replacement axles – we ask that you purchase your own so you can participate. We may add adapters once we see what demand looks like for them.

We have used the sweeper with standard bikes, and it works great. BUT – be aware that hills can be challenging. Be prepared to put forth some effort on the climbs – or – consider using your eBike if you have it.

OPERATING THE SWEEPER

Our model is a hybrid sweeper, meaning that it can be used in “pick up” mode or “push aside” mode depending on conditions. Please spend a few minutes on the Bike Lane Sweeper Instructions page – watch the video – and familiarize yourself with the sweeper, it’s parts, and adjustments so your efforts are rewarded with good performance. Not damaging the sweeper is also critical! Bike Lane Sweeper Instructions

PICK UP AND RETURN

During this initial pilot period, we will work with a limited schedule while learning the best and safest ways to deploy the sweeper.

Pickup and dropoff will be at the Ohio City Bicycle CoOp during their normal business hours – which are Noon to 5p on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. The sweeper can be picked up/dropped off anytime during this window. One user per day, as the battery needs time to cool and be recharged. The calendar to choose your volunteer spot(s) is below.

First step – sign our waiver before choosing a time: Bike Cleveland Waiver
