Help Make Lakewood’s Routes to School Safer: Join Our Intersection Audit Effort

Bike Lakewood is proud to partner with Lakewood City Schools and the City of Lakewood through the Hike & Bike program to make it safer and easier for students to walk and bike to school.

As part of this collaboration, Bike Lakewood has launched Safe Routes to School Intersection Audits — a community-led effort to collect on-the-ground data about how our intersections function during school travel times.

What’s an Intersection Audit?

An intersection audit is a simple observation that anyone can do using our one-page form and directions. Volunteers spend about an hour and a half watching an intersection during arrival or dismissal time and record:

  • How many times people cross each street (by foot, bike, stroller, or other mobility device)
  • Driver behaviors such as red-light running, blocking crosswalks, or illegal turns
  • Traffic signal and signage conditions (like if “No Turn on Red” signs are present or if pedestrian buttons are broken)
  • Any other factors that may affect safety for people walking or biking

Why It Matters

The information gathered through these audits helps our partners (the Lakewood Police Department, the City of Lakewood, and Lakewood City Schools) better understand how intersections are performing for families and students. Over time, these observations can inform discussions about crossing guard placement, traffic safety education, and infrastructure priorities.

Get Involved

You don’t need any special training—just a willingness to help and about an hour and a half of your time. Everything you need to know is in the toolkit.

Download the Safe Routes to School Intersection Audit Toolkit (PDF)

The toolkit includes clear directions, FAQs, and both example and blank audit forms.

If you have questions or you have a completed audit form to submit, please contact Lakewood@BikeCleveland.org.

Together, we can make Lakewood’s streets safer—one intersection at a time.
