Bicycle events coming up
A number of great cycling events are happening locally this week:
Cleveland City Council introduces Complete Streets legislation
Cleveland City Council is now considering Complete Streets legislation, which would mandate that every redesigned and reconstructed street in Cleveland include accommodations for pedestrians, cyclists, and transit and incorporate green features. Many cities throughout the United States have passed Complete Streets ordinances, which make neighborhoods more livable, vibrant, and safe.
A contingent of cyclists and advocates are attending the Cleveland City Council meeting tonight, Monday, September 12 at 7pm to show support for the legislation and encourage its passage. If you also want our streets to be inclusive of all transportation options, please join in the community effort. We need to demonstrate that Complete Streets is needed locally and its importance to the cycling community.
The council meeting takes place at Cleveland City Hall, 601 Lakeside Avenue, 2nd floor. If you’d like to ride downtown with others, a group is meeting at Joy Machines Bike Shop on West 25th Street in Ohio City at 6:15. All are welcome to ride along.
Boston Mills Bike Aboard
Local bike extraordinaire BikeCLE is hosting an enjoyable evening ride on the Towpath Trail this Friday, September 16 at 6pm. The train leaves at 6:30pm, so allow yourself enough time to park and unload your bike. The cost is $3 per person for the train ride and they are cash only. We arrive at Rockside Station at 7:00 and head back by bike for a 10.39 mile ride to Boston Mill. Bike rentals are also available from BikeCLE for $10 each by calling (330) 532-8687.
Old Brooklyn Bikequinox
Ride your bicycle throughout Cleveland’s Old Brooklyn neighborhood searching for answers to a list of trivia questions provided. Correctly answering enough questions will earn you a chance to win a great bike-related prize of your choice. A karaoke after-party (21 & over, please) will take place immediately following the raffle.
The Bikequinox happens on Saturday, September 17, 2011 at Mr. Peabody’s Pub, 4967 Pearl Road in Cleveland. The trivia bicycle ride starts at 6pm, with a karaoke after-party at 8pm. Old Brooklyn Pedal for Prizes is a grassroots volunteer initiative organized by a small group of committed neighborhood residents and merchants.
Ride for Miles
Ride for Miles is a nonprofit organization established by family, friends, and colleagues of Dr. Miles Coburn to educate people about the environment and bicycle safety.
The annual noncompetitive bicycle ride, Ride for Miles, raises funds for the John Carroll University Biology Department’s Miles Coburn Environmental Symposium. This project continues Miles’ work of educating students and the community about the urgency of environmental activism. The ride also remembers and commemorates Dr. Miles Colburn, who was struck by an SUV and killed on Saturday, August 16, 2008 while riding his bicycle in Newbury Township east of Cleveland.
