May is Bicycle Month!

There will be no shortage of cycling activities this May  – so no excuses for not getting out and about on 2 wheels! Let’s all celebrate the joy of bicycle riding, the freedom it brings, and the rewarding feeling of getting there under your own power.  We have highlighted a few of the events we are involved with below, and for a complete listing of everything Cleveland has to offer check out our complete Calendar of Events at the bottom of the page!

Bike Month Highlights

Bike Month Kickoff with UH and Slow Roll Cleveland

Get your month off to a good start with a ride!  Join University Hospitals and Slow Roll Cleveland on May 1st for a bike month kickoff celebration!  The event takes place on the lawn in front of UH and includes fresh fruit smoothies via our famous Blender Bike, information on upcoming bike month events, displays from local shops, and more. Then, as the festivities wrap up, we all grab our bikes and head out into Cleveland on the first official Slow Roll ride of the summer!

WHEN: May 1st, lawn event from 5:30-7:00,  plus the ride

Healthy Cleveland Ride

Join us for a Healthy Cleveland Bike Awareness Ride on May 7th! This ride meets at Nano Brew Cleveland starting at 9am, and children are welcome with a parent. Enjoy $5 Cleveland Bagel breakfast sandwiches, and a free bike repair station compliments of Joy Machines bicycle shop.  The bike ride starts at 10am with a 4 or 10 mile courses through our city seeing first hand how bicycles and motor vehicles can safely share the roads.

Final destination is Market Garden Brewery for a complimentary Cleveland Cruiser Radler Beer – or iced tea – for all riders to enjoy after a great ride.  Be sure to bring your helmet and bike lock!

Cyclofemme cleveland

CycloFemme is a Global Celebration of Women created TO HONOR THE PAST from the shoulders of those who stood before us, for the freedom to choose and the chance to wear pants. TO CELEBRATE THE PRESENT with strength and courage, voices raised, moving together. TO EMPOWER THE FUTURE of women everywhere, the backbone of positive social change.

2nd Annual Blessing of the Bikes

Trinity Cathedral will be hosting their second annual Blessing of the Bikes and bike rodeo on May 14th.  This unique event sees cyclists riding to the Cathedral for special 9 a.m. service honoring Cleveland’s biking community and its role in making the city a more sustainable, vibrant place to live. Following the service a bike rodeo in Trinity’s parking lot teaching basic handling, safety, and other essential tips for riders of all ages and skill levels will take place.  Located in downtown Cleveland, Trinity Cathedral is an Episcopal church for all comers, a center for arts and music, a gathering place for those devoted to Cleveland and its future, and a thriving urban community of faith.

WHEN: Service at 9 a.m followed by a bike rodeo at 10 a.m.

BIKESMARTS

May’s class will be on an important topic for all of us – Traffic Laws.  This is the topic that we receive the most questions about, and we are pleased to partner with a local law professional to cover the issues pertinent to those of us on two wheels.  Classes are only $10, and space is limited.  (FREE to Bike Cleveland members with code.)  For more information on this and the whole series, head to our Bike Smarts homepage.

Ride of Silence

On Wednesday, May 17th,  join cyclists across Greater Cleveland for the most important ride of the year. Local cyclists will join others across the globe in a silent slow-paced ride in honor of those who have been injured or killed while riding a bicycle on our public roadways. The Ride Of Silence is a free ride that asks cyclists to ride no faster than 12 mph and remain silent during the ride. There are no brochures, no sponsors and no registration fees.

This event begins at the Free Stamp in Willard Park, and this year’s ride will feature a police escort via Cleveland’s bicycle patrol division.  The route takes a simple route eastward through the city, eventually finishing at Case Western Reserve University.

Bike To Work Day

May 19th is National Bike to Work Day, and Cleveland is participating downtown and all through the suburbs! Pack up your stuff the night before and head out Friday morning on a commuting adventure – one that should continue daily all summer long. We will make Friday special by inviting you to one of our “Energizer Stations” for some free and coffee and breakfast goods to make your morning bright.

Join us and our partners at locations all over Greater Cleveland and celebrate along with the entire country.  Cleveland RTA are on board if you need help with your commute or the weather doesn’t cooperate. On May 19th, passengers with bikes ride free all day!

Black Girls Do Bike – Cleveland Ride

Join Black Girls Do Bike as they ride through the Glenville Neighborhood on two wheels! Blackgirlsdobike.com’s interest is in growing and supporting a community of women of color who share a passion for cycling. They champion efforts to introduce the joy of cycling to all women, but especially, black women and girls. They are establishing a comfortable place where female cyclists can support, advise, organize meet-ups/rides and promote skill-sharing.

Riders will meet at 9am for quick bicycle safety check, ride at a leisurely pace for approximately 6 miles, then return for light refreshments and beverages afterwards.
