May 17th Enews – Ride, Repair Events, Take Action and More

There’s a lot to share this week. To start we need you to stand up for biking by telling the Federal Highway Administration not to ignore biking and walking; found out why and how to be heard here.

There are a couple opportunities to get out on your bike this week, including Bike to Work Day this Friday, the Ride of Silence on Wednesday (one of the most important rides of the year) and the Healthy Cleveland Bike Awareness Ride on Sunday.

Need your bike fixed up, we got you covered with two Fix-a-thons this weekend at Saint Peter’s Parish and in Glenville.

Finally, Fairport Harbor is hosting a ribbon cutting of the Fairport Harbor Bikeway complete with a ride around the signed bikeway.

PS. Don’t forget to get your tickets to our annual Share Your Draft Fundraiser taking place June 10th.

ACTION ALERT – FEDERAL PERFORMANCE MEASURES IGNORE BIKE/PED
An action alert thanks to our friends at the Leauge of American Bicyclists

The Federal Highway Administration once again ignored bicyclists when determining performance measures for our transportation system.
  • Even though Congress just instituted a complete streets policy for the National Highway System (Main streets, arterials and other major roads), FHWA wants to measure performance of the system using a measure for drivers only.

  • It measures congestion by measuring delay for drivers, but gives no credit to states or metropolitan areas that invest in biking, walking or transit facilities that reduce congestion.

  • Finally, the rule sets goals for measuring air pollutants from transportation, but doesn’t include greenhouse gases.

You can read more about the rules and how they impact bicycling here.

If these draft rules are implemented, they will hinder the ability of local governments to implement complete streets, build protected bike lanes, etc. Take action now by telling FHWA to stop ignoring bicyclists and pedestrians and to include all modes of transportation in their performance measures

2016 RIDE OF SILENCE – May 18th

The Ride Of Silence is a free ride that asks cyclists to ride no faster than 12 mph and remain silent during the ride. There are no brochures, no sponsors and no registration fees.

Like in past years Cleveland’s Ride of Silence will have two start points –
