Fall Hike & Bike Week – Sept. 21-25
Fall Hike & Bike Week is September 21–25, 2026!
Organized by Bike Lakewood, the City of Lakewood, and Lakewood City Schools, this citywide event encourages students and families to walk and bike to school—not just during Hike & Bike Week, but as a regular part of getting to school.
For students who already walk or bike, it’s a chance to celebrate and keep it going. For families who would like to try it but aren’t quite there yet, it’s an opportunity to take that first step—or pedal rotation.
Connect with other families
One of the biggest barriers to walking or biking to school can be simply figuring out how to make it work. Maybe your child would feel more comfortable walking with a friend. Maybe you’d like your student to bike to school, but don’t want them riding alone. Or maybe your family already walks or bikes and would be happy to connect with others along your route.
This fall, we’re encouraging families to make those connections.
Ask around at your school, connect with neighbors, or look for other families traveling the same way. You might find:
- A friend your student can walk or bike with
- Families who live along your route
- An existing walking group or bike train
- Other families interested in starting one
You don’t have to walk or bike every day for it to count. Try it once. Ask a friend to join you. Start small.
Every trip helps make walking and biking more visible and more normal in our community.
Help us improve routes to school
While you’re out walking or biking, let us know if there’s something that makes the trip difficult or uncomfortable.
Consider completing a Walk Audit for your route:
Walk Audit Toolkit(opens in new tab)
Feedback from these audits is shared with partners including the City of Lakewood, Lakewood City Schools, and the Lakewood Police Department to help inform planning, maintenance, enforcement, and future improvements near schools.
You can also report infrastructure problems directly to the City through Report a Problem(opens in new tab), including issues such as:
- Non-functioning pedestrian signals
- Damaged or deteriorating sidewalks
- Potholes
- Sidewalks and bikeways blocked by debris, construction materials, or other obstacles
Hike & Bike Week is just one opportunity to get out there. We hope the connections you make and the routes you discover this week can help make walking and biking a little easier in the weeks and months ahead.
